The number of days that legal fireworks can be sold and set off in Rohnert Park has been shortened from six days to five under an ordinance adopted Tuesday.
Rohnert Park, Petaluma, Sebastopol and Cloverdale are the only areas in Sonoma County that allow so-called "safe and sane" fireworks, which are used by nonprofits as a major fund-raiser.
The ordinance limits the use and sales of fireworks from June 30 to July 4.
It's a compromise between critics who oppose fireworks because of the fire danger and noise, and supporters who consider fireworks a natural part of Independence Day revelry.
Fine for violators range from $250 to $750. Fines for the use of illegal fireworks are $1,000.
The ordinance initially would have allowed legal fireworks to be used only on July 4, but that was considered unworkable because fireworks are sold over a five-day period.
Councilman Jake Mackenzie, who opposes all fireworks, cast the only negative vote against the fireworks ordinance, which otherwise passed without comment.
