PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Just days after small fireworks are legalized in RI, they're already lining store shelves.
This has some people increasingly concerned for the public's safety, as 4th of July draws near.
One of the first places to start selling small fireworks, Casey's Legal Fireworks has set up shop in Warwick. There are sparklers and smoke-balls for sale inside.
But before you rush to the store, officials warn to put safety first.
No matter the size, fireworks should be used with caution. "They burn at extremely hot temperatures. Burns to the hands and legs are some of the injuries that we see the most," says Anthony Di Giulio, Providence Fire Marshal.
Di Giulio adds, "make sure you don't have too much to drink, that you're aware of your surroundings. If there are any kids around that the children are well supervised." Fireworks can only be purchased by someone over 16.
Di Giulio says fireworks sales could help the state, as long as they're used properly.
Lawmakers say sales could generate about a million dollars each year.
Rhode Islanders who we spoke with agree it'll be good for the economy. Diane lazicki says, "people are going to buy fireworks anyway. They're go into Connecticut over the line, they're going to go in to other states. This way they can buy them right here and everyone can benefit."
