Vancouver's Celebration of Light fireworks festival and competition attracts huge crowds over four nights: Wednesday, July 21st, Saturday, July 24th, Wednesday, July 28th and Saturday, July 31st. Each night showcases one of four participating countries: USA, Spain, Mexico and China. All shows fire from a barge near English Bay Beach at 10:00 p.m.
History of Fireworks
The history of fireworks may have originated in China 2,000 years ago. One legend states a Chinese field cook observed the reactions of charcoal, sulfur and saltpeter. Approximately 1000 years ago, a monk known as Li Tian may have invented firecrackers. On April 18th each year, celebrations and sacrifices honour Li Tian. By tradition, the explosive sounds could frighten away evil spirits.
Evolution in Europe
Explorer and merchant Marco Polo (1254-1324) may have brought Chinese gunpowder to Europe. The Crusaders may also have brought black powder. Black powder was used for military purposes that included rocketry and guns.
