COLLINGDALE — This year’s July Fourth celebration will be a little less bright: Fireworks are canceled.
"We just don’t have the money,” said Mayor Frank C. Kelly at a recent borough council meeting.
Kelly said he met recently with the July Fourth committee, and the determination was made to cancel the fireworks because of declining attendance and donations, as well as increasing costs.
Fireworks for this year’s celebration would have cost about $14,000, Kelly said. Additional funds would be needed to pay for borough police, fire and ancillary staff to keep attendees’ safe and traffic moving.
"The money just isn’t there and the borough can’t subsidize it,” he said.
Council President Kathleen M. Munro said the borough will continue to host July Fourth festivities earlier in the day.
