More than 100,000 fireworks have been set off over Edinburgh, marking the end of this year's festival.
Organisers said audiences from 75 countries flocked to the Edinburgh International Festival (EIF) this year, to see more than 2,500 artists perform throughout the arts and culture spectrum.
Jonathan Mills, festival director, said: "There has been a tremendous atmosphere at festival performances, enriching exchange and journeys undertaken, political and cultural delegations from across the globe cultivating relationships with Scotland and the UK through the festival, and a fantastic critical and audience reaction to this year's artists.
"This was a challenging festival, one that asked audiences to take a risk and to join us on a distinct and remarkable journey. I am pleased that we are where we need to be financially, but I am particularly delighted that there has been such a terrific response to the programme and that shared aspects of our cultures and humanities have been so clear and accessible to festival audiences.
"We've enjoyed some stunning performances, I've been moved, entertained and gripped by artists across dance, theatre, our visual arts, music and opera in what I think has been a very special festival."
The Virgin Money Fireworks Concert provided the festival finale, and is believed to have been watched by an estimated 250,000 people in parks and other vantage points across the city.
The Scottish Chamber Orchestra and conductor Garry Walker played Eastern-inspired music in Princes Street Gardens and the display had been choreographed along with the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.
The concert is thought to be the largest annual live music and pyrotechnic display in the world, using four tonnes of explosives and 12 tonnes of kit.
It took eight days for 15 experts to set up the fireworks, which included a "waterfall", which illuminated the castle.
Cllr Steve Cardownie, festivals and events champion for the City of Edinburgh, said: "The capital this year was thriving, with a number of outstanding performances in venues across the city - I am very much looking forward to next year already."
