SALINAS, Calif. -- Another Central Coast city is considering lifting a ban on selling fireworks.

The Salinas City Council will consider lifting a ban on selling "safe and sane" fireworks to raise money for nonprofit organizations.

Members of the City Council will discuss the issue at a meeting Tuesday evening, Mayor Dennis Donohue said at his weekly news conference.

Salinas Fire Marshall Mark Latham said the sale and use of "safe and sane" fireworks has never been permitted in city limits.

Latham said he isn't in favor of changing the policy.

"I can't get people to use candles safely in their home. Now we talking about using explosives," Latham said.

Others said that during these tough economic times, giving nonprofit organizations a resource for funding would be helpful.

"I think it is a great opportunity during these tough times, which as anybody would note, is tough to get donations and what not," said Erik McClain, of Peacock Acres Inc..

The recommendation is to lift the ban for two years. After the initial two years passes, the city would reconsider putting the ban back in place.

The city of Watsonville is also considering lifting a ban on selling "safe and sane" fireworks.
