COWES Week bosses say there is still a long way to go before the event's traditional fireworks finale is saved despite an anonymous £25,000 donation.
As previously reported in the Daily Echo, regatta organisers issued a plea to the public and local businesses to help with the running costs of the £50,000 fireworks spectacular.
The world famous display, which has taken place for more than 150 years, was last year enjoyed by 75,000 people - but paid for by money raised from the event's 1,000 plus competitors.
Cowes Week Limited, which runs the regatta, has said it is not fair for competitors to have to foot the entire bill for the display.
A fund was set up for contributions to the fireworks, and received one particularly generous donation of £25,000 from an anonymous supporter.
However event organisers said there was a "long way to go" before the fireworks could be given the green light.
A spokeswoman for Cowes Week Ltd said: "The appeal is certainly moving in the right direction and the generous £25,000 donation covers half of what we need to raise.
"However there is still a long way to go before the fireworks display is safe."
