PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Oregon House of Representatives has approved a bill that would prohibit the use of fireworks in Portland except for a 6-day window that includes Independence Day.
Rep. Chip Shields of Portland introduced House Bill 2539 at the request of constituents. He says fireworks scare pets, damage property and waste police time when the noise is mistaken for gunfire.
Therapists who treat veterans are also supportive of the bill, saying fireworks can inflame combat stress and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The bill moves to the state Senate.
