Why Factory Audits Matter

The fireworks industry has a wide quality spectrum. At one end: factories with modern QC labs, climate-controlled powder storage, and ISO 9001 certification. At the other: operations that cut corners on safety, use prohibited chemicals, and deliver inconsistent quality. Your brand reputation depends on knowing which one you are dealing with. A proper audit — in person or remote — is the only way to know.

Pre-Audit Document Check

Before visiting (or doing a video audit), demand these documents:

1. Safety Production License — verify the license number with the issuing authority
2. Business License — confirms legal entity and factory address match
3. ISO 9001 Certificate — verify with the certification body
4. CE/DOT/EAC Certificates — verify Notified Body numbers and expiration dates
5. Export Track Record — ask for Bills of Lading from recent shipments (not just a client list)

If they hesitate on any of these, that is your first red flag.

On-Site Audit Checklist

Production Areas:
• Are raw materials stored in climate-controlled, segregated areas?
• Is magnesium powder stored in moisture-free conditions?
• Are production lines clean and organized?
• Do workers wear proper PPE (anti-static clothing, grounding straps)?
• Is there a visible QC station on each production line?

QC Laboratory:
• Is there a dedicated lab with testing equipment (not just a desk)?
• Can they show recent raw material test reports?
• Do they conduct live-fire testing? Ask to see the firing range and recent test videos.

Warehouse & Logistics:
• Are finished goods stored in proper DG-compliant warehouses?
• Is there a documented container loading procedure?
• Can they show recent loading photos/videos with proper DG stacking?

Remote Audit: Video Verification

If you cannot visit in person, demand a live video audit (not pre-recorded):

1. Start outside the factory gate — ask them to show the factory nameplate and address. Match it to the business license.
2. Walk the production floor — ask to see specific areas: raw material storage, mixing room, assembly lines, QC station. No skipping.
3. Show me the QC lab — ask them to open testing equipment and show recent reports.
4. Show me a firing test — if they cannot do one live, ask to see test videos with date stamps from the current week.
5. Show me a recent loading — ask for photos or video of the last container loaded, showing proper DG stacking.

A factory that welcomes a live video audit is almost certainly legitimate. One that makes excuses is not.

Red Flags That Mean Walk Away

🚩 "We cannot show you the production floor for security reasons" — there is no security reason to hide a fireworks factory floor
🚩 "Our QC is done by a third party" — who is the third party? Verify independently
🚩 "We tested your products but cannot share the video" — legitimate factories have nothing to hide
🚩 "The certificate expired but we are renewing it" — ask for the renewal application receipt. If they cannot produce it, the certificate may never have existed
🚩 Prices significantly below market — there is a reason, and it is usually quality or safety
